The correct answer is A. “What happened to ‘Dee’? “I wanted to know. “She’s dead,” Wangero said. “I couldn’t bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me.”

Explanation:

The word irony is a literary device that consists on meaning something but saying it using language that means the opposite or the existence of incongruency or contractions between the expectations in some situation and the way the situations ends or evolves. This means irony is used to show different types of contractions in mainly a humorous way to emphasize these contradictions or incongruences.

On the other hand, "Everyday Use" is a short story written by the American author Alice Walker that tells the story of an Afro-American woman and her two daughters (Dee or Wangero and Maggie), in this story, the author explores the meaning of heritage, culture, and family as the two daughters have different ideas on the way heritage should be preserved. From the quotes given from "Everyday Use," the one that is an example of irony is “What happened to ‘Dee’? “I wanted to know. “She’s dead,” Wangero said. “I couldn’t bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me.”

This can be explained as in this quote the mother and narrator ask Dee why she decided to change her name to Wangero (an African origin name)  and she explains "Dee" is a name from white people that oppressed her ancestors "I couldn’t bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me", but the reality and what her mother explains to her is that was  named after her aunt Dee and not after any white people. This shows the attempt of Dee to preserved her heritage by changing her name to one with African origin is actually against this idea as she is acknowledging her family and the reason why she was named "Dee" therefore there is an incongruence between the idea of Dee to support her culture and her actions that go against this idea which creates and irony situation. Thus, the quote that is an example of irony is option A.

My name is Ann [436]

Answer:

1) This passage does not contain an argument. It begins with a comment that everyone knows the U.S. is having an election (in 2008); the author proceeds to state three things that he thinks Europe should focus on.  He does not offer reasons for his statement that these three things are jobs, Muslims, and neighbors.

2) This passage contains both an argument and a sub-argument. 1.The butler was passionately in love with the victim. Thus, 2. It was not the butler who committed the murder. 3. Either the butler committed the murder or the judge committed the murder. Therefore, 4. The judge committed the murder.  The sub-argument goes from (1) to (2), and the main argument goes from (2) and (3) to (4). Note again:  identifying the structure does not imply saying that this is a good argument.

3) This passage contains an argument. Standardization: (1) No one who uses a relatively unreliable procedure in order to decide whether to punish can know whether that other person deserves punishment.  (2) No one who cannot know whether another person deserves punishment has a right to punish that person.  Therefore,  (3) No one who uses a relatively unreliable procedure in order to decide whether to punish another person has a right to punish that person.

jekas [21]

Answer:

It came to be believed in the eighteenth century that nature was best understood through reason, so poetry became more closely aligned to reason.

But why reason?

The Age of Reason (Enlightenment) in England was a widespread intellectual and literary movement that took place in Europe and England. The movement was shaped by the idea of rationalism (reliance on reason as the best guide for belief and action).

Some characteristics:

  • No Passionate Lyricism
  • Rationalism
  • Scholarly Allusions
  • Heroic Couplets
  • Realism
  • Adherence to Classical Rules

yanalaym [24]

Answer:

Me preguntaba…

Tiene alguna idea…

Me gustaría saber…

Seria posible…

Hay alguna oportunidad…

Preguntas directas e indirectas en inglés: ejemplos

Directo: ¿Dónde está Market Street?

Indirecto: ¿Podría decirme dónde está Market Street?

En preguntas indirectas con is / are, el verbo (is) viene después del sujeto (Market Street).

Directo ¿A qué hora abre el banco?

Indirecto: ¿Sabes a qué hora abre el banco?

En preguntas indirectas, no usamos los verbos auxiliares do / does / did.

Directo: ¿Por qué te mudaste a Europa?
