Americans were asked to plant victory gardens in order to:

Limit the amount of food and resources they would purchase- America's entrance into World War II resulted in the need of a significant amount of food needed to feed the troops. To increase the amount of food available, people were encouraged to grown their own food so that they would not have to purchase as much. Along with this, excess food grown could be used to support the war effort. These victory gardens were portrayed as something all Americans should do in order to help the war effort.
