The mockingbird is used to symbolize innocence - just like the bird is innocent and does nothing to harm others, the young protagonists of the books are kind and innocent, and often suffer because of it. It is a sin to kill someone's innocence, just like it is a sin to kill such a beautiful and harmless bird.
