Plessy v. Ferguson, case in which the U.S. Supreme Court, on May 18, 1896, by a seven-to-one majority (one justice did not participate), advanced the controversial “separate but equal” doctrine for assessing the constitutionality of racial segregationlaws. Plessy v. Ferguson was the first major inquiry into the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment’s (1868) equal-protection clause, which prohibits the states from denying “equal protection of the laws” to any person within their jurisdictions. Although the majority opinion did not contain the phrase “separate but equal,” it gave constitutionalsanction to laws designed to achieve racial segregation by means of separate and supposedly equal public facilities and services for African Americans and whites. It served as a controlling judicial precedent until it was overturned by the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954).

monitta

Answer:

During the high Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church became organized into an elaborate hierarchy with the pope as the head in western Europe. He establish supreme power.

Many innovations took place in the creative arts during the high Middle Ages.

Literacy was no longer merely requirement among the clergy.

Even so, the Church maintained its power and exercised enormous influence over people's daily lives from the king on his throne to the peasant in the field. The Church regulated and defined an individual's life, literally, from birth to death and was thought to continue its hold over the person's soul in the afterlife, and most of Europe was Catholic so the Church had a grasp on most of the population.

The church building was the center of community activity and many parts of daily life. Religious services were held several times a day.

Town meetings, plays, and concerts were also held in churches.

Merchants had shops around the square in front of the church. Farmers sold their produce in the

square, and markets, festivals, and fairs were held there, as well.

Which of the following was not a component of the Compromise of 1850?
tia_tia [17]

Answer:

The admission of Kansas as a free state

Explanation:

The Compromise of 1850 consisted of four major provisions that aimed at defusing political confrontations that have originated on the issue of whether to allow slavery in the U.S.'s new western land that Americans had acquired in the Mexican-American War.

Under the Compromise, a new Fugitive Slave Act was enacted to require citizens of free states to assist in capturing fugitive slaves or to face fines or imprisonment, California was admitted as a free state, Congress gave "popular sovereignty" to the territories of New Mexico and Utah to decide whether to allow slavery and slave trade was banned in Washington, DC, although slavery continued to be legal there.

However, Kansas was nowhere mentioned in the Compromise. It wasn't until the Kansas-Nebraska Act that this territory was organized under the principle of popular sovereignty that allowed white residents to decide whether to allow slavery.
