A wooden board 100 centimeters long is cut into two pieces.One piece is 16 centimeters longer than the other. What are the lengt
8090 [49]
Legnth are x and y
x+y=100

one is 16 more than other
x is 16 more than y
x=16+y

x=16+y therefor we can put 16+y for x
(16+y)+y=100
16+y+y=100
16+2y=100
minus 16 both sides
2y=84
divide by 2
y=42

sub back
x=16+y
x=16+42
x=58

the legnsh are
42 cm and 58cm

A) find a cartesian equation for the curve described by the given polar equation. r =3 sin g
Radda [10]
Recall that r^2 = x^2 + y^2, so that r = sqrt(x^2+y^2).

                                                                        y
r = 3 sin g becomes    sqrt(x^2+y^2) = 3*-----------------------
                                                                  sqrt(x^2+y^2)

Squaring both sides,

                    9y^2
x^2+y^2 = -----------------
                  x^2 + y^2

If this is correct (and I'm not convinced that it is), then (x^2+y^2)^2 = 9y^2
shows the relationship between x and y.  Can anyone improve on this result?
