Many treaties were broken and the government never followed through on their promises to Native Americans. One U.S. policy would be the Federal Indian Policy. During the 1800s, the relationship between American settlers and American Indians began to deteriorate. Although many American Indians pushed to assimilate to American culture, Southerners still felt that their presence was unwelcome. In the 1830s, Congress began to remove native grounds from the Southeast to land across the Mississippi River in forced marches, which would later become known as the Trail of Tears.
