One of the main goals of Lyndon B Johnson's Great Society Programs was to get rid of poverty.

LBJ declared a "War on Poverty." His goal was to provide economic opportunities and support for citizens out of work. His hope was that this assistance by the government would help to eliminate the poor living conditions faced by millions of Americans. This is why he established federal agencies like the Office of Economic Opportunity.
