Lyndon B. Johnson took office right after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and he continued with the civil rights cause as a legacy to the former president. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964 <em>(which prohibited segregation in public facilities, such as transportation and schools, and racial discrimination in employment and education),</em> and transmitted the ceremony through television so the entire country could see it, afterwards he signed the Voting Rights Act<em> (which protected the rights of African Americans to vote)</em>.
