In the excerpt Billy Collins speaks about letting a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out, like in a maze, it is not a common straight road, because he writtes probe his way out, probe is used to describe something or someone wandering or exploring a road, in this case that´s why the maze is the best way to describe poetry.
