One conflict that surfaced was the issue of states’ rights versus federal power. Both sides had arguments that only angered one another and worsened the situation. The individual states argued that the tariffs enacted by the government were unconstitutional. Their claim said the government was violating states rights by pushing tariffs on the states without their consent.
