एक नदी के किनारे एक छोटा सा गाँव था। उसमें बहुत से पेड़-पौधे, खेत और पशु-पक्षी थे। नदी में औरते कपड़े धोती और बच्चे खेलते कूदते तैरते और मछलियाँ पकड़ते। वहाँ खेतों में गेहूँ, मूम्फ़ली और पिली-पिली सरषो उगाई जाती थी। उस गाँव में छोटा सा तालाब भी था जहाँ कमल खिलते थे और साथ ही बतख और मेंढक भी रहते थे। इस गाँव से भी पुराना था एक जंगल। गाँववाले मानते थे कि यह जंगल उनका पुराना दोस्त है क्यूंकि वे उन्हें खाने को फल, घर बनाने को लकड़ी, बीमारी के समय दवाई के रूप में जड़ीवूटी और सबको प्यारे लगने वाले फूल भी देता था।
जैसे-जैसे गाँव में लोग बढ़ने लगे, उन्हें रहने के लिए अधिक मकानों और खेती के लिए अधिक जमीनों की जरुरत पड़ने लगी। लोगों ने पेड़ काटकर खेत बना लिए। समझदार लोगों ने चेतावनी दी कि पेड़ मत काटो पेड़ उनके दोस्त हैं। अगर इन्हे काटोगे तो गाँव के लोग मुश्किल में पड़ जाएँगे। लेकिन किसी ने उनकी बात नहीं सुनी और धीरे-धीरे जंगल छोटा और कम होता गया। अब इस गाँव के बीच बर्षों पुरानी दो पेड़ मजबूती से खड़े थे। एक पेड़ था पीपल का। उसमें हर साल नरम-नरम तिकोनी पत्तिया लगती और पीपल के पेड़ के पास खड़ा था बरगद का विशाल बृक्ष।
आखिर अंत में वहीं हुआ, जिसकी समझदार लोगों के चेतावनी दी थी। चार साल तक एक बूंद भी पानी नहीं बरसा। सभी चिंतित हो गए। सूरज खूब तेज चमकता रहा। कमल सुख गया, तालाब तक सुख गए, बतखों ने गाँव छोड़ दिया।नदी में कीचड़ की एक पतली धार बन गई थी। कुछ लोग कहने लगे, “लोगों ने पेड़ काटे हैं, यह मुसीबत इसीलिए आई हैं। अब जैसे ही पानी बरसेगा हम लोग बहुत सारे पौधे रोपेंगे। पक्षी तिलमिला उठे। तालाब भी रोने लगे। प्यासे मेंढक भी टर्राहने लगे। सूखे खेतों ने प्रार्थना की।
अंत में सब लोगों ने एक साथ प्रार्थना करि और एक दिन सबकी प्रार्थना ने ताकत का रूप ले लिया। यह ताकत ऊपर उठती गई और अंत में वह आकाश तक पहुँच गई और चांदी जैसा चमकीला बादल बन गई। देखते ही देखते अनगिनत बादल सारे आकाश पर छा गए जिनसे सूरज का चेहरा ढक गया। फिर सेकड़ो हज़ारों पानी के बूंदे गिरने लगी सुखी घास पर, पशु-पक्षियों पर और सभी लोगों पर। सब लोग खुश हो गए और नाचने लगे।
पीपल और बरगद के पेड़ ने बारिश को धन्यवाद देते हुए एक गीत गाया। फिर सब लोग जुट गए पौधे लगाने। गाँव फिरसे हरा-भरा हो गया और उस दिन से सबने यह निश्चय किया कि अब से वह लोग पेड़ नहीं काटेंगे बल्कि पेड़ लगाएँगे।
