They(US) believed that the support from Taliban will enable them to  gain an allies against Iran, and for smooth channelling  of oil pipeline routes out of the Gulf region through Pakistan.The reason was that these pipeline routes should be under  her(US) allies in this case the TALIBAN. The plan was that if  the pipeline route  would be  through the Pakistan to the Gulf.Hence a good Arab Allies  would be needed.
