What is the meaning of the phrase chosen specimens and why does Wharton use it in her
Veronika [31]

This question is incomplete. Here's the complete question.

Read The Age of Innocence , by Edith Wharton

Answer:

Wharton, taken by evolutionary theories and anthropology, used related terminology ("chosen specimens") to describe her thoughts about the 1870's New York being in contradiction with Europe, which was devastated by the war.

Explanation:

Wharton describes Newland Archer as feeling "distinctly the superior of these chosen specimens of old New York gentility," showing that he considers himself intellectually and culturally superior to his New York elders and their rigid society.

I remember squatting in the road drawing a picture in the dust, a picture which Joey gleefully erased with one sweep of his dirt
Len [333]

Answer:

I don't know if this question is supposed to have options, but, if not, I would say that the word that describes the mood of the excerpt is sensitive.

Explanation:

The character in these lines is remembering situations from the past that connect him/her with nature, in the case of the picture in the dust and in the second scenario when trying to fish for minnows. The speaker also remembers that Joey is laughing in both situation. It is easy to see for the reader that the speaker feels sensitive with the things he or she remember having around him/her in that time he/she describes.
