The establishment of the Open Door Policy (1899-1900) and the response to the Boxer Rebellion (1900) showed that the United States wanted to (2) gain access to Chinese markets. The Open Door Policy was basically a trade agreement where powers could trade openly with China, but more so in a way to reap benefits than benefiting both countries. The Boxer Rebellion was a rebellion from Chinese nationalists opposing European and American intervention for trade in China.

The quipu was a collection of colored strings of alpaca, llama or cotton threads used to record accounting information in the form of knots.
