The main purpose of the Espionage Act was tokeep all Americans unified to support the war effort.

Further Explanation:

The Espionage act 1917 was a Federal law of United States Legislature implemented on 15th June 1917 after the participation of the United States in the World War I. It proposed to prohibit the prying in military operation to avoid loopholes for the United States enemies during the commencing of the war. It urged penalties tending to loss of life. It was further extended by the “Sedation act of 1918” that modified the espionage act prohibiting any form of Speech against administration. It also forbade usage of abusive language, disloyalty, scurrilous and profane, violating to which can lead imprisonment up to 20 years.

It was implemented along with the “Trading With the Enemy Act” related to the “Defense Secret Act” of 1911 that prevents an unauthorized individual from having statistics for which he is not eligible. Overall we can say the act urged for the support of the civilians during the war and avoid any kind of spying issue during the war.
