Declarative memory is long-term memory. It is made up of facts and events that can be remembered. It is also known as explicit memory since it comprises information that is explicitly stored and recalled.
Declarative memory entails the processing of names, place, date, events and so on. It processes information very fast. Declarative memory can be subdivided into two, episodic and semantic memory.
Episodic memory has to do with our memory of experience, events and situations. Your memories of first kiss, attending a friends party and your sister graduation are all unique examples of episodic memory. Not only is episodic responsible for the recollection actual events, it also deals with the memory of the time and location that the event took place. There are types of episodic memory which include episodic memory of specific events, episodic memory of personal fact and episodic memory of general events.
Semantic memory is the basically the type of declarative memory (long term memory) that involves the processing of concept and idea not derived from our personal experiences. Semantic memory involves things that are common to us such as color names, sound of letters, state’s capital or county capital, knowing how to operate a phone and other facts that we gathered in our lifetime.
