In the story, the narrator sees himself differently than the other wounded soldiers because he believes they are heroic and he is not. Ernest Hemingway wrote, "In Another Country" to refer to the terrible effects of war in the soldiers. Physical effects as well as mental effects. The wounded soldiers are in a hospital located in Milan, Italy, during World War 1. They are trying to recover from wounds. Topics such as courage, determination, cowardy, fear, and doubt are shared by the soldiers while trying to recover in the hospital.
