The Aztecs took over other tribes which lead to slavery. The Aztecs sacrificed slaves for the gods they worshipped. They thought the gods needed human sacrifices to stay healthy and happy. During these ceremonies, the slaves would have their hearts taken out while they were still alive.

The Aztecs had slaves as most native American culture does. Slavery is often a form of punishment for a crime, as a way to pay a debt, or as a captive, but they were not born into it. Slavery did not have a big impact on the society and economy as slaves have several ways to gain freedom, and did not play significant role in farming and trade which the Aztecs excelled.
