In 1881 he was elected to the Assembly of the State of New York as his youngest member. His first book of History, The Naval War of 1812 (1882), gave him fame as a serious historian. After a few years working on a cattle ranch in the Dakotas, Roosevelt returned to New York City and gained fame fighting against police corruption. The Spanish-American War broke out when Roosevelt was directing the Department of the Navy, charge that he immediately resigned to lead in Cuba a small regiment known as Rough Riders, which obtained a nomination for the Medal of Honor and that was delivered to him posthumous in 2001 [citation needed].
