In 1950's women were not women, they were slaves. They were not counted as human. They had no right to vote. They were just slaves of their husband. The women's role was to look after the children and husband, cook dinner, clean the dishes and at the end of the busy day they would have to make sure that their husband is comfortable at night when he was sleeping.
