There was the need for a larger, standing army with greater mobility that made the vassal system outdated, obsolete and old-fashioned.
Explanation:
The Great Wall of China had 2 purposes. First one being to be an obstruction to prevent invading armies and secondly to be a sign to the world the power China had. The first one failed though because the wall guards could be paid off to open a gate or the armies simply went around the wall. The second goal was a success though.
