Although, I read Macbeth around 2 years ago, I believe I remember it fairly well enough to remember that the scene with the witches involved lots of foreshadowing and dramatic irony (this keeps the reader on edge), as they know slightly more than the characters (in the play) and then make predictions on what is going to happen, which is what the question is asking/describing.
