Foreshadowing helps develop suspense throughout the story and to give direction to the piece. Ex 1: in the Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, he describes Fortunado’s love for wine, it helps the reader understand why he is lured into the catacombs with wine. Ex 2: in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat” Pluto’s stomach has the gallows on it, a prediction of what is to happen to the narrator. Hope this helps!

Answer:

The author uses foreshadowing to contribute to the story's overall meaning because it shows what is likely going to happen when the family keeps the monkey's paw. One example the author uses foreshadowing is when the solider tells them to burn the paw. I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, dont blame me for what happens." They didn't listen and it came back at them. Another example of foreshadowing was when the solider said the last wish was death. "I dont know what the first two were, but the third was for death." This is foreshadowing because when the old man made his third wish Herbert wasn't at the door.
