Which of these excerpts from "Once in a Lifetime" by Jhumpa Lahiri most clearly exemplifies diversity within socioeconomic statu

s?
1. "It's a cigarette you smell," he said when he came back to bed. "Someone has been smoking in the bathroom."
"I didn't know Dr. Choudhuri smoked," my mother said.
"Should we have put out an ashtray?"

2. "First class!" my mother exclaimed, with an intake of breath. "How did you end up there?"
"It was my fortieth birthday gift," your mother explained.
She looked over at your father, smiling. "Once in a lifetime, right?"
"Who knows?" he said, clearly proud of the extravagance. "It could become a terrible habit."

3. "There's a stream back there," you said, "in those woods."
My mother became nervous then, warning you not to go there, as she had so often warned me, as I had warned you the night you came, but your parents did not share her concern. What had you photographed? They asked instead.

4. "Bombay is nothing like Calcutta," you added, as if reading my mind.
"Is it close to the Taj Mahal?"
"No." You looked at me carefully, as if fully registering my presence for the first time. "Haven"t you ever looked at a map?"

Explanation: Hema's parents are in shock at Kaushik's more expensive lifestyle which contrasts to their own more modest lifestyle, which further shows the socio-cultural gap in between the families as well. In the story, the upper-class style of spending was considered a western influence.

Should Gym class be required in school? Gym class should be required in school, due to students sometimes not being healthy enough to do simple tasks, because it helps your body, and because it gets you up and moving instead of being in a classroom all day! Some students say that it's not essential, but it should be! Gym class gets you up and moving, and can provide energy for your brain to learn! Did you know America is the country with the most body mass index out of all countries! Making gym required for them might help them, more than hurt them! Does your body hurt? Is it sometimes hard to breathe doing simple tasks? Is it hard to run? Well, that's because you are unfit! Taking a simple gym class daily can help improve your body so much that your heart will be stronger, you will be able to breathe better and live a healthier lifestyle! According to class room .com, "The risk of chronic disease later in life is decreased with physical activity. Students who participate in a gym or physical education class have increased learning and are more alert in the classroom. Immune function is increased and stress levels decrease after physical activity." This shows that to not develop chronic diseases later on in life, it is essential to take a gym class! It gets you moving, and doesn't just make you think better but live better! But that's not the only example of how gym class can help you! Gym class can also help you focus and relax! How does working out make you relax you may ask? Well, just think. If you are sitting behind a school desk all day, your body starts to ache and you may not focus that well! Well, gym class helps you get up and moving! It will help you focus, and set your mind to the task ahead of you! Gym class is an essential thing for life! So in conclusion, gym class should be required in schools... because it helps you focus, betters your body, and can reduce the risks of getting diseases later on in life! If you get up and get moving a little each day, you will be able to breathe better, your heart will start to beat better and you can even lose some weight- I know- lose weight right everybody wants to do that! If we simply make it so students have to take gym classes in all schools around us, we can better our country and world! So make gym class required in all schools in the world TODAY! What is the significance of repetition of the word absurd in the importance of being earnest?
Pachacha [2.7K]

In "<em>The Importance of Being Earnest</em>" Oscar Wild uses irony to transmit a meaning that is opposite of its real meaning, specially situational and dramatic irony.

The play is a "<em>satire</em>", a genre intended to ridicule for the purpose of entertainment and very often to expose flaws in society.

So the use of meaningless dialogues is a common practice in the genre, and the repetition of the word absurd is an example of it, provoking an incoherent situation, to criticize the Victorian society of that time by ridiculing it.
