Why did the Suez Canal increase European interest in the Ottoman Empire?

The suez canal was of extreme importance for trading with the East and the Ottomans controlled it. If it happened that Ottomans disliked someone, they could just ban them from going through the canal which would severely harm the economy of that other country. That's why it was in the best interest of everyone in Europe to stay on the Ottoman's good side.
