Before it was a French colony, Haiti was called Saint-Domingue.
The Island itself was, and continues to be, called Hispaniola.
Haiti was the original name of the Island given it by the indigenous people, the Taino. This name was restored when Haiti achieved independence.
A main cause of the trade was the colonies that European colonies were starting to develop. Also some African societies had long had,their own slaves and cooperated with the Europeans to sell other Africans into slavery.

WWI caused the decay of monarchies and rise of fascism. WWI also changed the face of modern warfare by implementing tanks, submarines, airplane-dropped bombs, machine guns, and poison gas.</span>
The north's economy was based predominantly on manufacturing,shipping, and other factory businesses.
In the south, however, most of the economy was agricultural, requiring many farmworkers.
