Answer:

The embankment.

Explanation:

"The Grapes of Wrath" is a novel written by John Steinbeck. The novel had won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The story is set during the time of the Great Depression. The story focuses on the struggle of Joads Family. The family is a poor tenant farmer stricken by drought, and economic hardships, they had to leave Oklahoma.

In Chapter 3, of the novel, titled "The Turtle", the story opens with a turtle facing a lot of troubles. The first trouble that it is faced with is the slanted highway embankment. Determined, the turtle crosses over, then he face the speeding car.

The story is connected to the story-line of the novel as whole. The struggles of the turtle are similar to that of the Joad family, who are in search of a new job on the road because of the Great Depression.

The lead-up to "Carmaggedon" was feverish. Which evidence from the text supports
saul85 [17]

Answer:

then-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged residents to get out of town, or at least to stay off the roads; billboards were posted up all over the city letting Angelenos know about the coming closure; radio statements were made by all the major radio personalities; one airline offered four-dollar plane rides from Los Angeles to Orange County; bike groups sponsored cross-city excursions; helicopter companies offered half-hour long discounted rides to see the construction in action from the air; and local bars and restaurants offered "Carmageddon" specials, which included special dishes and discounts on food and drink. The Los Angeles Police Department was brought in to ensure drivers did not sneak onto the freeway or onto Sepulveda".

Explanation:

In the short passage about the problem of Los Angeles and its problem with the traffic, Measure R deals with the proposed plan and solution to solve this issue. The narrator talks of how the authorities tried hard to dissuade the "Angelenos (that is the name of Los Angeles’ inhabitants)" from adding to the ever increasing traffic problems. Rather than try to get their own vehicles to get to work, the narrator claims that if the public transport system is made more efficient and dependable, then the traffic will not only improve but also lead to more citizens depending on its public transport and leave their own vehicles, thus adding to the decreased traffic snarls.

The event "Carmaggedon" as the narrator terms it, is when a whole I-405 freeway being blocked "for an entire weekend in 2011 in order to expand one of the bridges that connect Mulholland Drive across the hills of the Santa Monica Mountain range". This not only led to more traffic snarls, but also to a much more complicated situation. And the lead up to this moment was made more feverish with the many 'excitements' that the people feel. "then-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged residents to get out of town, or at least to stay off the roads; billboards were posted up all over the city letting Angelenos know about the coming closure; radio statements were made by all the major radio personalities; one airline offered four-dollar plane rides from Los Angeles to Orange County; bike groups sponsored cross-city excursions; helicopter companies offered half-hour long discounted rides to see the construction in action from the air; and local bars and restaurants offered "Carmageddon" specials, which included special dishes and discounts on food and drink. The Los Angeles Police Department was brought in to ensure drivers did not sneak onto the freeway or onto Sepulveda".

The above passage supports the conclusion to the statement that the Carmaggedon led to a feverish reaction/ outcome.
