Texas Governor Sam Houston was against the secession, but he was not able to prevent it. In his speech before Lincoln's election, he presented the argument that slavery would be safer within the U.S than outside it. He considered that the Republican party is based against their institutions.  

He was serving as governor of Texas during the Civil War. He opposed secession and refused to take the oath of loyalty to the Confederate States of America, so he was evicted from his position.  He saw secessions with the sectional Republicans in power as the destruction of Texas and the South.
