What were some important effects of the reformation

History

The Reformation’s most direct impact was upon religious and philosophical thought. It came about largely through dissatisfaction with the Catholic Church, which was a preeminent authority in Europe in the 1500s, when the Reformation began. As a result, the Church was fractured, giving rise to the multitude of Christian denominations that are seen in modern times.

Reformation leaders like Martin Luther declared authority should be derived from the Bible, not the Pope or the Church, giving rise to Protestant systems of belief. Religions like Lutheranism are a direct result of the Reformation.

The movement had economic impact as well. John Calvin, another Reformation leader, taught a doctrine of predestination and hard work. He taught that financial success was a sign one was destined to salvation in the afterlife, and that merchants who succeeded in business did so because God looked upon them favorably. This gave rise to what is known as the “Protestant work ethic,” which led to the economic system of capitalism.

The Reformation inspired a mood of anti-authoritarianism, which led to backlash against the feudal system and, by extension, to the democratic movement around the world. In the centuries following the Reformation, movements like women’s suffrage and the abolition of slavery traced their roots back to Reformation-era principles.

Up until this point, the Catholic Church had basically a monopoly on religion in Europe. Most definitely it was the only real Christian religion at the time. Before the Reformation, it could easily be said that the Pope was the real ultimate authority in Europe, not the king of any particular nation. Life in Medieval times revolved around the Church.

With the rise of the Protestant Reformation the Catholic Church, and in essence, the Pope was no longer the supreme authority in Europe. Kings of the Protestant nations became the true rulers of their nations.

Without the Reformation, the power and corruption within the Catholic Church would have continued to grow. Instead, this put a check on it.

Why did the office of Vice President become more important, with more responsibilities, as the twentieth century progressed?
slava [35]
As the scope of responsibilities of the President of the United States increased during the 20th century, the Vice-President came to be relied upon to handle greater responsibilities also.

A 21st century Vice-President, Joe Biden, said it well: “The way the world has changed, the breadth and the scope of the responsibility an American president has virtually requires a vice president to handle serious assignments, just because the president’s plate is so very full." Biden was quoted in the book, The American Vice Presidency: From Irrelevance to Power, published by Smithsonian Books in 2014.

Another point might be made about 20th century Vice-Presidents -- especially in the latter half of the century. A number of Vice-Presidents became President because of things that happened to the President. . President Franklin Roosevelt died while in office, and was succeeded by his Vice-President, Harry Truman (in 1945). Vice-President Lyndon Johnson became President when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Gerald Ford rose from Vice-President to President when Richard Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment.

In the current situation of American politics, with partisan politics strongly dividing Congress, Vice-President Mike Pence has functioned a number of times as the tie-breaking vote in the Senate on important matters -- another way the Vice-Presidency has taken on greater responsibility lately.
