I think the Proboscis helps a butterfly to survive because it offers a wider range of food for it to eat compared to when it was a caterpillar. When they are adults they can drink almost any liquid, but as caterpillars they must eat certain plants, that's why the females are so selective on which plant they lay their eggs on.
