Continental drift is a theory that initially postulated the movement of continental masses over the Earth's geological time, considering that, previously, the current continents had other forms and even were located in other locations on the planet. These observations were made even before the knowledge about the tectonic plates, which served as a further proof of the movement not only of the terrestrial continents, but of the entire crust.

The theory of continental drift emerged a long time ago, since since the mapping of some points on Earth, it was suspected that the continents were previously united. Francis Bacon, in 1620, suggested, for example, that the east coast of the South American continent and the west coast of Africa fit together perfectly, giving the impression that they had separated in the remote past.
