The control group of a clinical trail is a group of individuals that unknowingly are receiving a substance that have no therapeutic effect (placebo), instead of receiving the treatment. Control groups serve to determine the effectiveness of the drug and to monitor the psychological effect of receiving a substance with no therapeutic effect.
