Slavery had a direct impact on the classism system that is still very apparent in the society today. Slavery brought about the ill-treatment of African Americans that was manifested in a society that is divided into classes. While there can't be a definite answer, there is an explanation. America is generally a diverse place, as it is the country of immigrants. This brings in a mixture of culture.
Certain cultures may have hate for others, which can generate the hate you see. Another possibility is the idea of the silent majority. The amount of people who spread hate may be in the minority, but their voice is so loud they may appear to be the majority. =)
