After the fall of the Ottoman and German empires with the end of the First World war, there remained the issue of who would take over the territories and colonies of the empire.
To this end, the League of Nations established a Mandate System where these territories were either out rightly given to other victorious nations or were managed on behalf of the League of Nations by a victorious country in the World War.
This system benefitted the British and the French the most who went on to divide most of the territories in question amongst themselves. The British for instance, took over Palestine, Iraq, Tanzania, and parts of Cameroon and Togo.
The French took Syria, Cameroon and parts of Togoland.
