Chile The United States opposed Allende’s socialist policies and supported a military coup. The US-backed coup removed Allende from power and installed Pinochet as ruler. Pinochet was cruel and oppressive. He jailed and tortured many people. Chile transitioned to democracy in the late 1980s.

Nicaragua The corrupt Somoza family ruled for four decades. The pro-communist Sandinistas overthrew the government. The US-backed Contras fought Sandinistas. A civil war followed. Nicaragua transitioned to democracy in the 1990s.

Argentina The country had been an oligarchy since gaining its independence from Spain. The Great Depression was a blow to Argentina’s economy. Juan Perón led a populist movement. The government fell to military juntas in the 1970s. The juntas undertook a “Dirty War” against citizens. The juntas disbanded in 1983 Democracy was restored in Argentina in the early 1980s and the country’s economy recovered.

Mexico For 50 years, one political party (PRI) controlled Mexican politics.  Vicente Fox challenged the PRI in the 2000 election. A government was stable, and the unemployment rate fell. Mexico still faces challenges with poverty and drug cartels.

Brazil The country came under military rule in the 1960s and experienced a booming economy. An election in 1985 restored democracy. The democratic government worked to reduce economic inequality. Brazil is a democracy with steady economic growth.
