A primary source would be an account from someone who was there, so a nonprimary source would be an account from someone who was told what happened by somebody else. For example, if a friend of mine saw a car crash and then told me about it, he would be a primary source, but if I went and told somebody I would be a secondary source.

Al Smith died in 1944 so he could not have participated in the election of 1982.

Instead, he was a candidate in 1928.

The other candidate was Herbert Hoover, a Republican, who also won the election.
