Answer: D) The Era of Good Feelings
Further details:
- The phrase "Era of Good Feelings" was coined by a journalist, Benjamin Russell, in the Boston newspaper, Columbian Centinel, on July 12, 1817. Russell used that term to describe the new era taking shape, especially as Monroe's presidency began, after Monroe visited Boston as part of a goodwill tour of the US. President Monroe certainly went along with the description and was trying to evoke that "good feelings" sort of mood in the country. Historians see "The Era of Good Feelilngs" as having begun around 1815, after the War of 1812 and the end of Napoleon's wars in Europe, when the United States entered an era when it could focus on its own affairs and not need to be concerned about political and military happenings in Europe. The "Era of Good Feelings" is strongly associated with Monroe's two-term presidency, from 1817 to 1825. President Monroe made goodwill tours of the country in 1817 and 1819 to promote national pride and national unity.
Southern agriculture was critical to the development of the Southern states, as it enabled them to use free and forced labor in order to see large profits. Lets take a look at each option:
A) The plantation system was efficient and profitable, leading to growth in Southern agriculture. (The plantation system was not super efficient, as relying on slave labor resulted in many issues)
B) Most South Carolinians could afford to run a large plantation, increasing production of agricultural goods. (Most people from South Carolina could not afford much, as only the top percent of the population was able to open and run plantations.)
C) The plantation system eliminated the need for slaves, allowing them to work on smaller farms. (NO! The plantation system CREATED the need for slaves)
D) The development of the plantation system allowed cotton to become a major export of the South. (YES! Cotton became a backbone of the Southern exports. Whenever we think of the south during and prior to the civil war, we think of cotton plantations, which were entirely dependent on slave labor.)
This means that the answer is D- The development of the plantation system allowed cotton to become a major export of the South.
I hope I've helped! :)
Van Cliburn (1934-2013) was an American pianist that was worldwide known because in 1958, when he was 23 years old and in the middle of the Cold War era and its tensions, he won the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Moscow was the capital of the Soviet Union, the country that leaded the communist block and that was the US greatest enemy.
The international piano competition was an event designed with the aim of proving the cultural superiority of the Soviet Union, after the very recent victory that the URSS had reached in the space race with the launch of the Sputnik in 1957.
Of course, it would be considered a shame that a foreign artist, and even more an American one, could perform better than the national ones. In fact, the soviet judges asked President Khrushchev if they could give the prize to an American. In this case, prejudices were left apart between two declared enemies, and culture won that night when the prize was given to the best artist, the American pianist.
