Protections guaranteed by the 6th Amendment:

1. The right to a public trial without undue delays.

2. The right to an impartial jury.

3. The right to be informed of the charges against you.

4. The right to confront your accusers.

5. The right to counsel (to have an attorney represent you).

It might be worth noting that some of what is contained in the 6th Amendment was assured already in the Magna Carta of 1215, which guaranteed a free man should not suffer punishment without “the lawful judgment of his peers.” The 6th Amendment is worded as follows: "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence."
