<span>Protections guaranteed by the 6th Amendment: </span>

<span>1. The right to a public trial without undue delays. </span>

<span>2. The right to an impartial jury. </span>

<span>3. The right to be informed of the charges against you. </span>

<span>4. The right to confront your accusers. </span>

<span>5. The right to counsel (to have an attorney represent you). </span>

It might be worth noting that some of what is contained in the 6th Amendment was assured already in the Magna Carta of 1215, which guaranteed a free man should not suffer punishment without “the lawful judgment of his peers.”  The 6th Amendment is worded as follows: <em>"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence."</em>

He wanted ‘justice’, but he did not want revenge. He said that the peace must not be harsh– that would just cause another war in a few years time.  He tried to get a ‘halfway point' – a compromise between Wilson and Clemenceau.
He also wanted to expand the British Empire, maintain British control of the seas, and increase Britain's trade.

He helped convert the French loans into ready cash by selling bills of exchange for Robert Morris, the Superintendent of Finance. In this way he aided the Continental Army and was possibly, along with Morris, the prime financier of the American side during the American Revolutionary War against Great Britain.
