His anticommunist crusade finally ended when he started attacking the United States army, claiming that it had a lot of communists in its higher ranks and that they were secretly working with the soviets. This was when the American people finally realized that he's claims are all wrong and that he wasn't really in his bright mind. People also realized that the USSR was not as strong as it was believed.
