Back in Galileo's day, one of the objections to the heliocentric model of the solar system is that if the earth is spinning, we

should all be "thrown off the earth." Actually, you do weigh a bit less on the equator than you would at the poles. Calculate how much. (Hint: Construct force diagrams for a 100 kg person standing on a bathroom scale at the equator and at the pole, and do the Fnet calculations.\

Answer: at the equator the normal force will be 3.4N less and at the North Pole = 980N

Explanation:

So, we will start the Calculation by considering the equation below;

Fnet = F(g) - F(N); where Fnet = mv^2/ r.

Hence, F(g) - F(N) = mv^2/ r -------------(1).

Making F(N) the subject of the formula, we have;

F(N) = Gm1m2/r^2 - mv^2/r.

Thus, we have;

Gm1m2/r^2 = 6.68 × 10^-11 × (5.98 × 20^24) × 100/ 6.38 × 10^6 = 980N.

Also, we have;

mv^2/r = m4π^2r/T^2.

100 × 6.38 ×10^6 × 4π^2/(24 × 3600)^2 = 3.4N

Therefore, at the equator the normal force will be 3.4N less and at the North Pole = 980N.

Write a short paragraph of about 150-300 words. Explain how the physical environment can limit human activities.
nikitadnepr [17]

Answer:

Explanation:

The physical environment is the part of the environment made up of both man-made and natural features. They consist of some physical factors like water, soil, e.t.c. Mountains, rivers, valleys, hills, dams, lakes all makes up the physical aspect of our environment and much more.

The physical environment can limit human activities in the following ways:

  1. Barriers to communication and transportation: most times roads have to be cut through longer distances in order to bypass natural features like a huge mountains, a voluminous river e.t.c. This can severely impact the communication between places and people.
  2. Natural disasters: The physical environment can pose serious risk to humans through disasters such as earthquake, landslide, flooding, wildfires, e.t.c.
  3. Drought and famine: When several elements of the physical environment combines, they can lead to little to no rainfall for plant to thrive. This is very dangerous for life on earth. Human activities are connected a lot to how rich and useful a soil can be.
  4. Climate changes and global warming: Human activities are greatly impacted by changes in climate and weather. If too much rainfalls, it becomes a problem to farmers and human activities as a whole will suffer. If sunshine diminishes abnormally, the earth suffers as solar radiation is very key to life on earth.

Which monsoon would a trader rely on to sail from Africa to India
soldier1979 [14.2K]

Sometime before 100 B.C., Greek sailors coming from Egypt discovered a shortcut to India.  Much easier and more direct than the arduous overland route, or than hugging the deserted coastlines of Arabia and Persia for 5,000 miles, this route took only weeks to travel.  Sailing straight out into the open waters of the Arabian Sea during the late spring, ships were whisked by the monsoon winds on a steady northeast course, arriving on India’s west coast by mid-summer. It was a daring feat for those first sailors who attempted it.  In a time when ships rarely ventured out of sight of land, and open waters invited the prospect of drifting aimlessly at sea, it took an extraordinarily bold, unlucky, or stupid navigator to sail out into one of the largest bodies of water on the planet.  Fortunately for those first crews who made the attempt, they were saved by one of the great forces of nature: the monsoon.
