People had land and job shortages and immigrants wanted to leave their country because of taxes that had risen,from war, for freedom, and sometimes it as because of famines (a period of time when food goes scarce or short). The difficulties of immigrants leaving their homes and starting a new life in the Untied States was to start from the beginning and work their way up to finding jobs and getting the money they need and they were often faced with prejudice or mistreatment from other people.
