Ann Richards was the last Democratic governor of Texas. Since Richards’ term, Republicans have controlled the governorship for 24 years, since 1995 until today.

Ann Richards left the government in 1995 at the hands of George W. Bush, who was governor until December 2000, when he became President of the United States, and was succeeded by Rick Perry, who held office for 15 years, until 2015 .

In 2015 Greg Abbott, also a Republican, was elected.
