Fulgencio Batista was first democratically elected in 1940 and served as president until 1944. Later, in 1952, supported by the USA, he led a military coup which resulted in him becoming an authoritarian ruler until 1959, when the Cuban revolution overthrew him. During his authoritarian rule and receiving financial and military support from the USA, he sided with the wealthiest Cuban landowners, to the benefit of the USA and to the detriment of the vast majority of Cuban citizens. This inevitably led to the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro.
