In triathlons, it is common for racers to be placed into age and gender groups. Friends Leo and Mary both completed the Hermosa

Beach Triathlon, where Leo competed in the Men, Ages 30 - 34 group while Mary competed in the Women, Ages 25 - 29 group. Leo completed the race in 1:22:28 (4948 seconds), while Mary completed the race in 1:31:53 (5513 seconds). Obviously Leo finished faster, but they are curious about how they did within their respective groups. Can you help them? Here is some information on the performance of their groups: The finishing times of the Men, Ages 30 - 34 group has a mean of 4313 seconds with a standard deviation of 583 seconds. The finishing times of the Women, Ages 25 - 29 group has a mean of 5261 seconds with a standard deviation of 807 seconds. The distributions of finishing times for both groups are approximately Normal. Remember: a better performance corresponds to a faster finish.
(a) Write down the short-hand for these two normal distributions.
(b) What are the Z scores for Leos and Marys finishing times? What do these Z scores tell you?
(c) Did Leo or Mary rank better in their respective groups? Explain your reasoning.
(d) What percent of the triathletes did Leo finish faster than in his group?
(e) What percent of the triathletes did Mary finish faster than in her group?
(f) If the distributions of finishing times are not nearly normal, would your answers to parts (b) - (e) change? Explain your reasoning.

Below are two different function, f(x) and g(x). what can be determined about their slopes?
babymother [125]

Answer:

F(x) has a larger slope.

Step-by-step explanation:

f(x) has a slope of 10 and g(x) has a slope of 9. The slope of f(x) can be found by dividing 800 by 80 (800 / 80 = 10). The slope of g(x) can be found by using the rate of change formula: y2 - y1 / x2 - x1. Choose two of the points from the chart. I'll use (2, -6) and (4, 12). Plug in the numbers so the equation would be 12-(-6) / 4-2. This simplifies to 18 / 2 which is 9.

Which is a solution to the equation?
(x - 3)(x - 5) = 35
x= -8
x=-5
x=2
x = 10
JulijaS [17]

(x-3)(x-5)=35

Multiply the brackets together

x*x-5*x-3*x-3*5

x^2-8x+15=35

Move +35 to the other side. Sign changes from +35 to -35

x^2-8x+15-35=35-35

x^2-8x-20=0

(x-10)(x+2)=0

x-10=0     x+2=0

Move -10 to the other side. Sign changes from -10 to +10

x-10+10=0+10   x+2-2=0-2

x=10                      x=-2

Answer: x=10
