b. Filippo Brunelleschi was chosen to build the dome for the Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. He set bricks in a herringbone pattern. He also invented a hoist to raise materials up to the sky.

Filippo Brunelleschi was a goldsmith who promised to build two domes, one nested inside the other without  elaborate and expensive scaffolding. He was granted the cupola project in 1420 serving as its superintendent. The project was finished in 1436.
