Last week, Ethan finished 3 1⁄5 books, but this week he only finished 1 4⁄5 books. How many more books did he read last week?
kykrilka [37]
Well first you need to convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions like so

3 1/5 would be 16/5 because 3 times 5= 15+1=16
the same with 1 4/5 but you can do this one a bit differently like so- 1=5/5 + 4/5 = 9/5
So now we move on to the subtraction part of the problem. 16/5-9/5= 7/5 because we know 16-9=7
But now you got to convert this improper fraction back into a proper fraction: 7/ 1 2/5 because 5 goes into 7 one time with a remainder of 2 (2/5)
So the answer would be: Ethan read 1 2/5 more books than he did this week.

A tree grows vertically on a hillside. The hill is at a 16° angle to the horizontal. The tree casts an 18-meter shadow up the hi
elixir [45]
The height of the tree is the sum of the part below the line parallel to the horizontal and the part above the line parallel to the horizontal.

Height of the part below the line parallel to the horizontal = 18 sin16° = 4.96 meters
Horizontal distance of the tip of the of the shadow from the tree = 18 cos16° = 17.30 meters
Height of the part above the line parallel to the horizontal = 17.3 tan68° = 42.83 meters

Height of the tree = 4.96 + 42.83 = 47.79 meters

Find the sum of the first 9 terms in the following geometric series. 64+32+16+
Dafna11 [192]

Answer:

The sum of the first 9 terms in the geometric series is 127.75

Step-by-step explanation:

In the geometric series, there is a constant ratio between each two consecutive numbers

Examples:

5, 10, 20, 40, 80, ………………………. (×2)

5000, 1000, 200, 40, …………………………(÷5)

General term (nth term) of a Geometric series is

a1 = a, a2 = ar, a3 = ar², a4 = ar³, ..........

an=ar^{n-1}, where

a is the first term

r is the constant ratio between each two consecutive terms

The sum of the first n terms of a Geometric series is calculated by this rule

Sn=\frac{a(1-r^{n})}{1-r}

Let us solve the question

∵ The geometric series is 64, 32, 16, .......................

∴ a = 64

∴ r = 32 ÷ 64 = 0.5

→ We need to find the sum of the first 9 terms

∴ n = 9

→ Substitute these values on the formula of the sum above

∴ S9=\frac{64(1-0.5^{9})}{1-0.5}

→ use the calculator to find the answer

∴ S9 = 127.75

∴ The sum of the first 9 terms in the geometric series is 127.75
