Explanation:

The Underground Railroad was a conventional escape route for African American fugitive slaves. It was in fact a network of roads, houses, organizations and communities.

Mostly all of the people who collaborated in this undertaking were abolitionists: formerly escaped slaves and free white Americans, most of them engaged on religious movements, mainly Pennsylvanian Quakers. Freed slaves traveled from south to north along the Underground Railroad (largely, further to Canada), but also to Mexico.
