Imagine this.. if you were in the middle of 2 fights, you would have weapons coming at you from both directions. If you blocked off one of the armies, it would be easier for you to defend yourself. Also, they could be more aware of an attack is they only have 1 side to worry about. :)

Since the cities were developing quickly, the industry was growing, and there was a constant demand for labor force, most of the people left the farmlands in order to get a job into the cities, so that they can have a better life.
