 "qu' " stands for "quoi" in an elision form. (what)

the answer is a fact.

je vais nager/ je vais à la piscine

Qu'est-ce que = answer => direct object (things) OR place phrase

Qui est-ce que tu as invité  à la fête= Who did you invite ?

the subject of the answer is "des amis" (friends" ) probably.

The answer are persons, so "qui" = "who"

Qui est-ce que = answer = direct object persons
