In an actively growing plant, water is The hydrogen bonding between the adjoining water molecules, commonly known as cohesion, allows the water column to be 'pulled-up' through the plant as the molecules of water is evaporating endlessly from surface of leaf cells that are exposed to sunlight.

The water evaporated is then replaced by another water molecule from soil water to leaf surface. This process is termed as the Cohesion theory of sap ascent in plants.
